Foods That Are Good For Your Bones

April 25, 2011 by drburt

BONESThe secret foods to having Strong bones

As we age, our bones become stronger. But as we grow older or reach middle age they begin to thin out and become fragile than they used to be. Women often feel it or would suddenly feel the change in their bones after reaching the menopausal stage. And we can prevent this from happening or we can prepare our body for it by eating right. Proper diet could help you prevent a lot of conditions that may develop as a person age. Knowing the right foodsto eat will definitely give a positive result. Here are some of the good foods you should include in your diet every day.

Sardines

Sardines are good source of calcium, a mineral that is important in developing your bones and making it stronger. Just by eating 3 ounces of sardines has more than enough source of calcium you need a day.

Drink your Milk

Milk is the most common source of calcium and everybody should at least drink an 8 ounce glass of milk every day. Not only kids need their milk as adults should also drink a single glass of it for their bones.

Other dairy products are good

If you can’t stand drinking milk every day then why not try out other dairy products which are also a good source of calcium? A cup of yogurt or an ounce of swiss cheese is as good as a cup of milk. There are a lot of dairy products that are lactose free for those people who are lactose intolerant.

Fortified Foods

When you do your groceries try to check the nutritional level of the food that you are buying. That way you can still enjoy the food you love to eat but you are also helping your bones get the minerals they need to stay strong. There are a lot of fortified foods in the market which contains a good amount of calcium per serving.

Going Vegetarian

Eating green vegetables have a lot of benefits and having strong bones is one of them. There are a lot of vegetables which naturally contains calcium like Chinese cabbage and kale. Turnip and collard also has a lot of calcium.

Supplements

Calcium supplements are probably one of the easiest ways to increase your calcium intake. But remember taking too much can also bring harm to your body so never exceed the 1,000 milligrams of calcium per day. If you can already eat foods that are rich in calcium then there’s no need for you to take supplements.

Salmon

Aside from sardines, salmon is also a good source of calcium. It also has a lot of vitamin D which helps in calcium absorption.

Soy Foods

Eating a little amount of tofu a day will make your bones stronger. Just about half a cup of tofu contains 258 milligrams of calcium.

Just a little salt

Salt and calcium don’t go too well inside your body. The more salt you take the less calcium gets absorbed by your system. Calcium tends to be washed away by urine when you take too much salty foods.

Nuts and Seeds

Having nuts and seeds like almonds and sunflowers seeds for snacks are a healthy way of eating. This food can help in strengthening your bones with their high calcium content.

Things you can do for your bones

Performing weight-bearing exercises

Doing fun activities such as brisk walking, tennis, dancing and yoga can help make your bones and muscles stronger. Studies show that the more stress you put in your bones and muscles the more material your body would supply to your bones to develop.

Sunshine

It’s free and abundant. Though sunshine is not food but you need it for your body to be able to absorb all the calcium you have taken. Vitamin D that your body will be produced in response to exposure to sunlight will help make your bones stronger.

Prevalence of overweight individuals have gone up form 44.8% to 66% since 1960. The greatest rise occurred after 1980 due to increased usage of refined products such high fructose corn syrup, processed meats, flower, and many other foods. Synergistic Blend

The blending of healing botanicals is a delicate art perfected only by a handful of experts. Ancient healers skillfully combined the powers of many herbs and botanicals to produce rejuvenating effects that have influenced even the art of modern-day medicine.

Gymnema

Gymnema [Gymnema sylvestre]

Often called the “sugar destroyer,” Gymnema has been used by Ayurvedic healers to help support healthy blood sugar levels for thousands of years. Gymnema also supports a healthy metabolism.

GuggulGuggul [Commiphora mukul]

Known as the “fat killer” in Ayurvedic medicine, Guggul is a powerful resin extract that comes from the small, thorny mukul myrrh tree. It is known in Ayurveda for its ability to help rid the body of unwanted fat, increase cellular fire, and support healthy cholesterol levels and liver function.

TurmericTurmeric [Curcuma ionga]

Native to tropical South Asia, Turmeric demonstrates the ability to compliment circulation and digestion and has been used for thousands of years as a safe anti-inflammatory.

Green TeaGreen Tea [Camellia sinensis]

A powerful antioxidant, green tea contains high concentrated levels of EGCG that neutralize toxic free radicals within the body. It also works to protect the DNA, regulate blood sugar levels, increase thermogenesis, and boost energy.

AmalakiAmalaki [Emblica officinalis]

For centuries, this small fruit, which grows in the fertile soil at the base of the Himalayas, has often been considered the most effective source for, among other things, promoting cellular rejuvenation, enhancing immune function, and increasing vitality.

HaritakiHaritaki [Terminalia chebula]

Haritaki has been shown to nourish tissues–particularly the heart, liver, and kidney–and treat diseases of the eye, and by blocking the ability to utilize sugars, Haritaki may have cholesterol-lowering qualities and help eliminate bacteria.

CinnamonCinnamon [Cinnamomum verum]

Used in the Vanilla version of NutriiVeda

Cinnamon has a long history both as a spice and as a medicine. Cinnamon aids with problems in the digestive system and is high in antioxidants. Seasoning a high carb food with cinnamon can help lessen its impact on your blood sugar levels. Cinnamon slows the rate at which the stomach empties after meals, reducing the rise in blood sugar after eating.

CayenneCayenne [Capsicum annuum]

Used in the Chocolate version of NutriiVeda

Many herbalists believe that cayenne acts as a catalyst and increases the effectiveness of other herbs when used with them. Cayenne is a medicinal and nutritional herb. Medicinally it aids in elimination and assimilation.

Diabetes, Diet, Chiropractic and Your Health

March 16, 2011 by drburt

DIEABETESThe current global prevalence of diagnosed with diabetes is 165 million and is estimated to increase to 250 million by 2010 and to 330 million by 2025. These alarming figures do not include undiagnosed diabetes or pre-diabetic states.

When a physician diagnosed a patient with diabetes that individual must adjust to a healthier lifestyle. One of the most important factors is making changes in a diet. There is no necessity to skip meals or your favorite foods that you have always loved. It is a scientific fact that skipping meals will increase glucose level in your blood stream, and that is not a good thing, especially for some who has diabetes. Moderation is the key.

It is important to stay away from deep fried foods or oily items, these foods always increase sugar blood level. A great healthy substitute to these foods would be low fat dairy, green vegetables and fruits. It is very difficult to cure diabetes, however, it is possible to bring it under control and live a normal life. Besides keeping a healthy diet it is important that individual with diabetes exercises on regular bases. The best form of exercise would be a cardiovascular training – swimming, jogging, cycling. This will keep your weight in control and will help to control your diabetes.

Foods that contain a lot of fiber is another great way to prevent an individual gaining extra pounds, thus keeping the sugar level low in your blood stream. A great example of foods with great fiber content would be: oat bran, beans, rice bran, cereals, fruits, and vegetables. Garlic can help you with your cold and it can also help you with your diabetes. It is rich in potassium, zinc and sulphur, those are essential elements that can keep your sugar blood level low.

If possible avoid foods that have high Sodium content (salt). You can simply get your sodium dose from many vegetable or other natural foods. This way you will shoot two rabbits at the same time – eating healthy and tasty foods.

It is essential that a person with diabetes keeps in touch with his/her doctor who can check the overall health condition of the person. A regular chiropractic adjustment will help to keep your system running at the higher potential. It is not a secret that nervous system controls everything in our bodies. Thus, if there is no interference from a subluxation the individual will feel even better. Chiropractic care along with massage therapy will also help to enhance joint mobility, decrease muscle soreness and keep your energy level up. Below is the list of symptoms that an individual might experience with diabetes. Chiropractic care can be of tremendous benefit for these conditions.

Musculoskeletal Disorders Associated With Diabetes Mellitus (DM)

Intrinsic Complications of DM

Limited joint mobility

Stiff hand syndrome

March 14, 2011 by drburt

pomegranateGrowing between five to eight meters in height, a pomegranate is a fruit bearing and tiny tree with deciduous like shrub features. This delicious fruit is native and found mostly in Iran and the Himalayas highlands between North India and Northern Pakistan. Today, it is popularly cultivated in India, Iran, Iraq, China, Azerbaijan, Burma, Afghanistan, Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia with lesser cultivation in tropical Africa, the Mediterranean and Southern Europe.

The Pomegranate becomes ripe when you start noticing its distinctive color and when tapped it makes a metallic clinging sound. The fruits should be picked days before maturity when they start showing signs of cracking open. It almost has the same shelf and storage life as the apple and is best maintained at a room temperature of 41 degree Fahrenheit to 32 degree Fahrenheit for a period of 6 to 7 months. It improves its taste and becomes more flavorful and juicier as time goes by.
This fruit produces 16% of vitamin C requirements of adults per 100ml serving of daily nutrients allowance making it one of the healthiest fruits in the world. Pomegranate is also rich in polyphenols and potassium, Vitamin B5, flavonoids, tannins and fiber.

The result found out that the adult men experienced a large increase in their antioxidant levels, which translates to a drop of ninety percent in their LDL cholesterol oxidation. The mice also turned up a result of 90% drop in their LDL oxidation of peritoneal macrophages.
The juice that the Pomegranates produced also helps alleviate viral infection and produces antibacterial compounds to battle against dental bacteria and plaque. It was also proven, that this fruit helps reduce the systolic blood pressure by injecting its serum angiotensin converting enzyme.

The popularity of Pomegranate is due to the fact many studies have shown that its high level of antioxidants is beneficial to one’s health in a lot of way.
