Sciatica Pain or Subluxated Sacroilliac Joint Pain

August 15, 2011 by drburt

sciatica painLast month I had two patients who came to my clinic because they thought they had sciatica pain. One of the patients has self diagnosed himself and the other patient was diagnosed by a medical doctor. Both of these patients had excruciating pain in their lower back, which radiated down to a lower extremity. It is very common that many patients will wait for their pain to go away with rest, anti-inflammatory and pain medication. As a result, pain symptoms will get worse and get to the point where pain medications will stop working.

The first patient was a male in his early 60’s. He came to my clinic on his crutches. The pain level was so intense that he was not able to support his upper body. The pain would shoot all the way down his right lower extremity past the knee level but did not effect his toes.  After thorough examination it was evident that his right SI (sacroiliac joint) was about 2 inches lower than the left SI joint. All of the nerves that were exiting from sacral foraminas (openings) were very irritated and inflamed. Every time this gentleman would place a load on his legs he would cry and I could see tears of pain on his face. After three sessions of full spine chiropractic adjustment, physical therapy (moist heat and electrical stimulation) and deep tissue massage from my CMT (Certified Massage Therapist) he was completely free of pain. I have recommended him to stop by once or twice a month for maintenance care in order to avoid future flare up and pain.

The second patient was a female in her early 50’s. She has had very similar symptoms as the patient I have mentioned above. Her medical Doctor diagnosed her with sciatica and prescribed her pain medications, which eventually stopped working. The examination finding were very similar to a patient I have mentioned above, except the part that the pain symptoms were on a left side. The pain intensity was so great that it would wake her up at night. The treatment parameters were the same  with addition of stretching to her lower back and some dietary changes. She was also advised on taking more frequent brakes from prolonged sitting that her job required. After 4 sessions she was pain free and was advised on a once a month maintenance care.

Sciatica Pain and Misaligned Sacroiliac Joint are two conditions that can be misdiagnosed or misunderstood by patients and other medical care providers. It takes much longer for a patient with Sciatica nerve entrapment to respond to a care. Often times Sciatic Pain is presented in athletes with intense training. In conclusion I would like to say that it is important to treat the cause of the problem instead of masking it with pain killers and anti-inflammatory medications. The sooner the cause is fixed the faster the road to recovery is.

San Leandro Chiropractic Clinic, 10 Years of Practice

San Leandro Chiropractic Clinic, 10 Years of Practice

This is a 10th year since I opened my San Leandro Chiropractic Clinic. It seems like I have graduated yesterday and next thing I know ten years passed by like one day. Many laws have changed in chiropractic profession in a State of California. However, the only one thing that has not changed at all was the care for the patients that I have treated for different conditions throughout these years. Some would come for a simple headache or neck pain, some would come in because they have severe lower back, shoulder pain or traumatic injury. The list of the conditions can go on and on but it is not the point of the discussion in this blog post. What is interesting that the change was made for everyone who came through the doors of my San Leandro Chiropractic Clinic. At this point I am counting over 1000 digital record files that are stored in my system. In my opinion that is an army of people who were treated with my hands and got respond from a chiropractic care.

It never stopped to amaze me how simple the principle of chiropractic is and how two hands of a chiropractor can change the life of a person. I have adjusted patients who were just new born babies, including my son, and as old as ninety two years old. My current active patient is eighty seven years old. He is still playing badminton several times a week and travels all over the State. Fast growing body of a baby needs constant correction because muscles are not strong enough to support the skeletal stracture. Many times I have seen patients coming to my San Leandro Chiropractic Clinic as the last resort because many other medical care professional failed to find the CAUSE of the problem. Yes, the principle of the profession is to find the CAUSE and the symptoms will disappear. The body has an amazing ability to heal itself.

I still remember the time when I was at my student clinic at Life Chiropractic College West. The program at school gave us fifteen months to finish all student clinic prerequisites and I finished mine in nine month. I guess my passion to a profession was reflected in those patients who had seen in me at a student clinic. I could have waited for six months doing nothing, graduate and move back to New York State. Yes, I made a trip in 1997, across the country and have reached Los Angeles in four days. Instead, I have decided to take one step farther and began a preceptor ship with a licensed chiropractor in San Leandro. I have transferred my patients from my student clinic into what has become San Leandro Chiropractic Clinic or  Burt Chiropractic. Spinal screening at Bay Fair Bart Station brought in quite few patients and allow me to build a small practice that was paying my bills when I have graduated in 2001. I guess my hard work paid off and that is why I currently enjoy my life with my family in San Francisco Bay Area with its unique climate that so many people adore. If you find this post on Google search engine and live in the area feel free to stop by my San Leandro Chiropractic Clinic and say Hi. I am always happy to see new faces and answer any health related questions. Oh, yes, there no charge for it 🙂

New Scientific Evidence of Innate Intelligence Existence

June 8, 2011 by drburt

NEURONScientific Evidence of Innate Intelligence Existence

Neuroscientists of Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne have been working on a Blue Brain Project. The most recent discovery about the neurons independent connections based on a subject’s experience. The complete published work can be found in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. (PNAS)

It has been known for sometime now that neuron connections are being established and reinforced in the human brain based on one experience – also known as “synaptic plasticity.” Do you remember your first bicycle ride? Once you learned it you will never forget. The team working on the Blue Brain Project at EPFL, led by Professor Henry Markman, however, is offering new evidence that this may not be the whole story.  The scientists were able to prove that small clusters of pyramidal neurons in the neocortex interconnect according to a set of immutable and relatively rules.  A complete discovery of this process was published in the last issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Each cluster contains about fifty neurons plus or minus. The scientists look at them as essential building blocks, which contain kind of in themselves a kind of fundamental, innate knowledge. For instance, certain physical experiences of this world. Mr. Markman says: “This could explain why we all share similar perceptions of physical reality, while our memories reflect our individual experiences.”

The principle determining the formation of these microcircuits is astonishingly simple. Basically, when two neurons are each connected to the same neighboring neuron, the probability that they are also interconnected is greater than average. The researchers were able to build a statistical model based on this observation.

During the experiment different rats have presented similar characteristics with neuronal circuits. If the circuits had only been formed from the experiences lived by the different animals, the values should have diverged considerably from one individual to another. That means that neuronal connectivity must in some way have been programmed in advance.

“Since John Lock, about 400 years ago, research into how the brain learns and remembers has been guided by the belief that we start from a clean slate and then print memories with each new experience. The idea that memory is like building lego with fundamental building blocks of knowledge opens up an entirely new door for research”, explains Markram.

Current technology is now allowing us to qualify the “tabula rasa” hypothesis, which argues that our brains are a “blank slate” at birth, and we only gain knowledge through experience. It’s an idea that has permeated science for centuries. There is no question that knowledge, in the sense that we typically understand it (reading and writing, recognizing our friends, learning a language), is the result of our experiences. But the EPFL team’s work demonstrates that some of our fundamental representations or basic knowledge is inscribed in our genes. This discovery redistributes the balance between innate and acquired, and represents a considerable advance in our understanding of how the brain works.

Prescriptions for Children or Conservative Care

May 6, 2011 by drburt

CHILDRENChildren in the USA becoming more and more drug dependent – I am talking about the legal kind of drugs. Pediatricians and Medical practitioners are prescribing drugs for different childhood conditions more then ever before. Many of these prescriptions have no positive effect on a condition that a child might have. Many conditions could have been resolved without any involvement of prescription medication and treated naturally. The truth is that there is a big pharmacological industry that has relationship with doctors who prescribe those medications. Yes, it is money driven medicine. The more medications pushed to a consumer the larger the compensation. Many of these drugs are not even safe to take, for a simple reason that there is not enough research done.  No one wants a child to be a guinea pig to find out weather a particular drug works or  not.

Chiropractic care is a natural and safe way for many pediatric conditions. You can always load your child with drugs which in most cases will only treat the symptom but not the cause. Chiropractic care allows the body to heal itself naturally. That means using conservative treatment options such as nutrition, diet, lifestyle changes and chiropractic adjustments first, rather than medications:
