Chiropractic Miracle Story While I was in a Student Clinic

December 15, 2010 by drburt

nervoscopeThis is a story about five year old girl who was my patient while I was an intern in student clinic at Life Chiropractic College West. The life of this little girl was completely devastated by frequent urination symptoms. She had to go to the bathroom about six to seven times an hour. Can you imagine your life like this?

Prior coming to see me she was under the constant observation of her pediatric doctor. I don’t remember at this point and time the exact treatment parameters of her doctor, but I do remember that it did not work all. Her parents were desperate and were ready to try the unknown field of Chiropractic. Both parents were very concerned about the impact of this problem on development of their child.

I did a thorough chiropractic examination. I used Gonstead nervoscope to determine which vertebral level had the most inflammation. Nervoscope is very sensitive to heat. When you move it along the spine subluxated areas of the spine will be inflamed and will exert heat. An arrow on the nervoscope will move if such inflamed area is detected.  My nervoscope had very strong reading at L4 vertebral level (read this post Relationship of the Nervous System and Spine to Organs). When I pressed the spinous process of L4 vertebrae with my thumb it was very sore and the girl jumped because of the pain level. Left rotation and left lateral bending were also restricted. Back then I did not have any physical therapy modalities and certainly did not have my own massage therapist. All I had was the power of chiropractic in my hands and my adjusting skills to help this little girl.

After first two visits the frequency of urination has gone down from six to seven times an hour to about two or three times an hour. After her sixth visit her symptoms disappeared completely and she stopped frequent urination completely. This happened about ten years ago and I am pretty sure if the problem would return she would be back in my office. But the only person I saw sometime in 2009 was her father for minor sprain in his right shoulder. I asked him how is his little girl is doing. He replied: “Little girl is not so little anymore, she turned into a princess.”  Her father confirmed that the problem has never returned and she was fine ever since I saw her last time.

This is a video of Dr. Gonstead talking about the nervoscope

Social Media ChiropracticIt has been officially four months since the inception of  this blog. Official starting date was August 1st, 2010. So far it has been a very interesting and challenging journey. Often times I felt like I was back in Chiropractic School, where a lot of effort and concentration was required. I even wake up in the middle of the night from time to time and thinking to myself: “Did I mention this information in this post and that post?” I know, it sounds funny, but it a reality. I just want everyone to know that I take this project very seriously by delivering unique and interesting content to my readers.

I would like to say a big thanks for anyone who stopped by this blog and left a comment and kept the conversation going. It means a lot to me. Thank you very much to all of the Twitter followers. Without your re tweets this blog would just be a static page in a blogosphere world. On Tuesday morning 12/07/2010, the official Burt Chiropractic Facebook Fan Page hit 100 subscribers from different parts of the world. Thank you very much for being a fan and for your support in my blogging journey. Facebook users don’t be shy to leave comments or click a share button. This is the only way to express the  knowledge about Chiropractic and health in general all over the world without boarders.

I will stay committed to deliver health related news three times a week. Next year I will try to deliver more videos in my blog posts. The range of video blogs (or vlogs) would be from particular real patient health problem to health related news where I will be speaking in front of my camera (pardon my accent :)). Today’s post is based on six most popular blog posts that were published in the past four months. Hope you enjoy it. Please don’t be shy by re tweeting it, like it, share it, email it or any other way you could help me to spread the word in a social media world.

13 Facts for Chiropractic and Wellness Care

In medicine, there are different ways to treat a patient. Some go for a surgery and this is usually the case when the patient’s problem cannot be resolved by other means. Surgery is the last resort with any injury or chronic pain. Some go for physical therapy while others prefer the chiropractictreatment. Many people utilize chiropractic services on a daily bases. However, how many people understand the theory scientific explanation behind chiropractic treatments. The philosophy in chiropractic care is that our body has the ability to heal itself without any medications. Our body naturally has the capacity to heal. It is also said that every few years, we get a completely new body. Our skin shed to make way for new skin and so do our organs but it does take awhile and with this knowledge we know that our body can really heal itself. It is the human spine that forms the foundation of our body and when it’s in the right position and there are no hindrances to it, we are at our best shape both in mind and body. The goal of chiropractic treatment is to achieve healing by regulating and maintaining a stable condition for our body. READ MORE..

Cycling – Lower Back and Neck Pain

Your body contacts the bicycle in three areas; your hands, your seat, and your feet. The relative positions of feet, seat and hands determine your comfort and efficiency on the bike. There are several variables that determine these positions; crank length, distance from crank center or bottom bracket to saddle, saddle angle, seat tube angle and saddle offset, distance from saddle to handlebar, relative height of saddle and handlebar width, and handlebar drop on road style handlebars. When these measurements are not taken seriously into consideration, pain and fatigue is inevitable during the ride. READ MORE…

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction Physiology and Causes

The temporomandibular joint, or often called as TMJ, is the joint of the jaw. We have two temporomandibular joints that work in unison, one on the either side of the jaw. It got its name because of the temporal bone and the mandible that forms the joint.

It is the most used joint in our body. It has 6 main components and they are themandibular condyles, the capsule, thearticular surface to the temporal bone, thearticular disc, lateral pterygoid and the ligaments. READ MORE…

Infant Chiropractic Adjustment

Last week I was visiting my family in New York City. My sister had her third child, beautiful and healthy baby boy – Gabriel. As soon as I saw my nephew my professional eye has noticed that his head was bent to the left at all times. Either he was laying down in his bed or held in hands the position of his head would not change. I could not help myself but perform a digital palpation of this one month old baby and figure out what was happening. READ MORE…

The First Scoliosis Coil in the Country – East Bay Upright MRI

East Bay Upright MRI has acquired a coil that take a full image of the entire upright spine – it takes only eight minutes to complete this process. This radiation free evaluation can also monitor the success of treatment provided by a Doctor. The only way that evaluation of scoliosis can be accurate is when the patient is in upright position. Conventional, recumbent MRI machines can not deliver necessary results. This radiation-free application can be performed in the same amount of time and at the same cost as diagnosis and monitoring by X-RAY. READ MORE…

Wellness Chiropractic Care or Symptom Based Care

November 26, 2010 by drburt

Wellness or PainThis month I have seen my three old patients who have not received chiropractic care for a very long time. The treatment gap varies for each of them. For one patient it was a year and a half, for another nine months, and for the third one it was six months gap. All three patients made an appointment to see me because their pain symptoms got so bad that none of them could function properly on day to day bases. Their quality of life has gone down to the point that it was basically a painful existence.

I have asked all of these patients the same question.  “Why would you wait for so long that your pain level has gone to the point that you can not enjoy your activities of daily living?” The first patient told me that He felt good for a long time since he saw me last time and gradually his symptoms reappeared and got worse. This gentleman has to seat in his office chair for 10 hours a day six days a week. When he walked in to my office his posture looked like a question mark.  Pretty scare stuff. He was crying like a baby when my massage therapist was working on his soft tissue. The second person was a patient who had a sport injury while skiing. Her neck and mid back were in pretty bad shape. The worse symptom was her eye site. She was loosing it very rapidly. Prescription glasses had to be replaced every other month. About twelve sessions of therapy brought her eye site back to normal, to the point where she did not need to wear any glasses. Neck and mid back pain has disappeared. Good results in a relatively short period of time. Third person had a bad case of TMJ. After several sessions utilizing SOT technique and some other tools his problem was resolved and he was very pleased with the results.

My advice to all of these three patients was to come back once a month for maintenance cares. I like to compare our bodies to a vehicle.  Everyone changes oil in their vehicle every 3000-5000 miles depending on the oil they use. After certain mileage we change tires, rotate them and balance the wheels. Tune up is a must for every car and changing brake pads is an inevitable process. Human body needs the same thing.

Every day stress creates micro injuries in our bodies. These micro injuries turn into more serious problem over time. For some it takes longer for some it takes much faster. Maintenance or Wellness care is the same thing as the tune up for your vehicle, oil change, and brake pad replacement. Without these basic things the vehicle will not run properly, and eventually will brake down. The same thing will happen to our bodies in a form of pain and eventually disease. My question is:  “Is it better to have a healthy quality of life or to live in a miserable existence.” Choice is always yours.

Infant Chiropractic Adjustment

November 17, 2010 by drburt

Infant Chiropractic AdjustmentLast week I was visiting my family in New York City.

A little bit about the birth history. The first two children were born normally without any complications. However, the third child was born via C section. It is kind of strange because statistically the second and the third child should be relatively an easy birth. Unfortunately for my sister the last addition to the family was positioned wrong and normal delivery via birth canal would not be possible at all. This prolonged abnormal positioning in a mother’s womb was the cause of the left lateral neck tilt.

During digital palpation I have noticed that the paraspinal musculature on a right side of Gabriel’s neck was very tight. He also had very limited ROM when I tried to bend his neck to the right side. After I have finished my examination I figured out that his C6 vertebral level was out of alignment. The newborn’s vertebrae are not ossified and are very small. The best way to adjust and palpate this tiny spine is by using small fingers of both hands.

I guess one video will replace thousand words. Below is a video of an Infant Chiropractic Adjustment.

Right after Chiropractic adjustment I have rechecked Gabriel’s cervical spine and noticed that he had improved range of motion in his cervical spine. You can see at the end of this video a happy smile on his face. I guess it is a sign of my nephew saying: “Thank you uncle.”

This is an article from Parents magazine about Chiropractic Care and Children written by Holly Pevzner who is a mother of two boys.

My dad sees a chiropractor. Some of my runner friends do, to. But babies? And  for crying? It’s true.  “Today about twenty percent of my pediatric patients come in because if colic or digestive issues,” says Elise G. Hewitt, a board- certified pediatric chiropractor in Portland, OR. Baby chiro care is not as scary as it may sound. The adjustments involve short, quick impulses delivered to the spine with hands, as well as using very light touch on the bones of the skull. It’s quite comfortable for the child and can be done while he lies on parent’s lap or chest. “babies often fall asleep during treatment,” notes Hewitt.

Why it may work for you: Soon-to-be published research found that parents were eight times as likely to report a significant reduction in crying when the baby was treated with chiropractic care three or four times over a ten day-day period than if the baby wasn’t, says lead researcher Joyce Miller, associate professor in clinical sciences at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic, in Bournemouth, England. The theory behind it: The practice helps alleviate tightness and joint issues that were caused by cramped position in utero or during birth. To find a chiropractor experienced with infants, talk to you pediatrician or go to  the website of the American Chiropractic Association
